Common questions
How much is a goat worth right now?
At the last 14 days of USDA-reported sales, 40-60 lb Selection 1 kids averaged $389.09/cwt, which is $3.89 a pound live. Multiply your kid's weight by that. Nannies and billies sell on their own tables, usually for less per pound and more per head.
What does Selection 1 mean for goats?
It is USDA's top meat-goat grade: the thickest-muscled, meatiest frame. Selection 2 is average meat conformation and Selection 3 is thin or light-muscled. The same weight of kid can sell tens of dollars per hundredweight apart across selections, so this page never blends them.
How do I turn $/cwt into price per pound?
Divide by 100. A kid at $350/cwt is $3.50 a pound live; a 60 lb kid at that price brings about $210 before commission.
Why do some sales price goats by the head?
Several offices, Pennsylvania's and the Carolinas' among them, report goats per head on an estimated weight instead of per hundredweight on a scale weight. Those lines are in their own column here and are never averaged with the per-cwt ones.
